Sakaja on the Edge? Nairobi MCAs Launch Impeachment Drive Over 20 Charges

Nairobi MCAs Push for Governor Sakaja’s Impeachment Over 20 Alleged Charges

Members of the Nairobi County Assembly (MCAs) have launched a fresh bid to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing nearly 20 charges that they say warrant his removal from office.

Sakaja is accused of misconduct, misuse of public funds, corruption, and not keeping important promises he made to Nairobians during the 2022 election campaigns. Speaking at City Hall during the ongoing signature collection drive, the MCAs revealed that their previous attempts to engage the governor on development matters had been ignored.

“We have been trying to highlight the problems, but he has been making excuses, including saying that he is busy and unable to solve them,” said Kilimani MCA Robert Alai.

The MCAs confirmed by Monday that they had already obtained the required minimum number of signatures to table the motion. They emphasized that the process is not politically influenced but rather a move to hold the governor accountable for what they describe as unmet promises and poor governance.

The impeachment motion will be one of the most high-profile political battles in Nairobi's recent history if it is successful.
