Thika Tragedy: Police Officer Opens Fire on Boda Boda Riders After Road Accident

 `

Thika Town was thrown into turmoil on Sunday, September 7, 2025, after a shocking incident near Makongeni Police Station where a police officer fatally shot two boda boda riders following a minor road accident.

Witnesses reported that the officer, who was driving his private Audi saloon, collided with a motorbike carrying a rider and a pillion passenger. Although police classified the crash as a non-injury accident, the officer blamed the rider for the mishap and attempted to leave the scene.

Outraged by his actions, a group of boda boda riders pursued and stopped him a short distance from the station. The situation escalated when the officer, sensing danger from the angry crowd, drew his firearm and opened fire. Two riders were killed instantly, sparking chaos in the busy town.

The mob later regrouped in large numbers, pelting the officer with objects before setting his car ablaze. By the time reinforcements arrived, the vehicle had already been reduced to ashes. Police moved swiftly to disarm their colleague and placed him in custody pending investigations.

In the aftermath, boda boda operators staged protests across Thika, demanding accountability and justice for the slain riders. Kiambu County Police Commander Doris Mugambi appealed for calm, warning against the rising trend of mob justice involving boda boda groups. She cited recent cases where buses were torched in Juja and Donholm after fatal crashes involving riders.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since taken over the probe, promising a thorough review of the officer’s actions and the violent reaction that followed.
