Marquinhos: “There’s no doubt this is the best team I’ve been, but…”

The PSG star said that, in terms of results, this is without a doubt the best squad he’s been part of since arriving, but added that in past seasons he played “with incredible players who made history in football and were my idols”

Brazilian center-back Marquinhos, a key figure at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), expressed both pride and honor in being part of what he calls the most successful season in the club’s history.

However, he stopped short of calling this PSG squad the best he’s ever played on.

“It’s a tough question, very specific,” Marquinhos said during a press conference ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup final.

“In terms of results, there’s no doubt this is the best team I’ve been on since arriving here. But I’ve played alongside incredible players at PSG—players who’ve made football history. If you just think about their names and the titles they’ve won, they might even be ahead of the players we have now.”

The São Paulo native went on to highlight the effectiveness of Luis Enrique’s current squad, describing it as “probably the team or roster that functions best collectively.”

Still, he acknowledged having shared “amazing moments” with former teammates in the French capital. “I was with them in a Champions League final when I was just a kid. I played with players who were my idols. So I can’t really say this is the best team I’ve ever played on.”

Marquinhos also discussed the development of the current squad, noting that it took some time to fully gel.

“Over the last few months, we’ve been playing at an excellent level in terms of reading the game and recognizing key moments,” he explained.

“If you analyze our play, you have to look at the forwards—Dembélé with the ball at his feet, Barcola and Doué pressing high. It’s a collective effort. The attackers and midfielders work hard, and they make life easier for us in defense. Our playing style is aggressive—we attack and keep possession. The more we have the ball, the less damage the opposition can do.”

The PSG captain emphasized the team’s respect for Chelsea and insisted that they’re approaching the match with full intensity. “We’re not compromising on effort—we want to keep winning and stay on top, which is the hardest part,” he said. “The emotion I felt winning the Champions League—that’s something I’ve only experienced a few times in my life.”

He also spoke about his Brazilian national teammate João Pedro, Chelsea’s young striker, predicting a bright future for him with the Blues.

“He has presence, technique, speed, and great movement. He’s a very complete forward. We’re going to keep a close eye on him. Just like we did with Vini, Mbappé, and Bayern... I expect my team to show maximum respect to every opponent and give their all.”

Chelsea and PSG will face off this Sunday at 3:00 PM local time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
